Out With the Old, In With the New Shoes
/At Texas Foot Specialists, we know that New Year’s is a time for fresh starts and resolving to make positive changes. We think one very good way to apply those ideas is by taking this opportunity to conduct a shoe inventory. The footwear you choose is one of the single biggest determining factors in the health of your feet and ankles. Shoes that are well made and fit the way they should will help keep your feet properly aligned and supported. This helps prevent many foot problems and will enable you to live an active life. Conversely, poorly made or ill-fitting shoes can cause injury and chronic foot pain. Examine the shoes in your closet and determine which need to be replaced.
What to Toss
Shoes have a natural lifespan. It is recommended that walking or running shoes get replaced every 300 to 500 miles. You should also discard shoes that have obvious signs of wear like:
Holes or loose stitching
Worn down heels
Flattened arches and insoles
Heel cups with compressed cushioning
The ability to bend a shoe completely in half
You may also want to say goodbye to shoes with heels over two inches high and those styles that have narrow, pointy fronts. These styles tend to increase the risk of bunions and hammertoes.
Good Replacements
Once you know what types of shoes you need, go to a reputable shoe store and start by having both of your feet professionally measured. If you have a chronic foot problem, you may want to talk to our podiatrists Dr. Bruce Miller and Dr. Gregory Mangum to see if they have any recommendations regarding footwear features that will help – not hurt – your feet.
Contact our Sugar Land (281-242-4448), Pasadena (281-991-0600) or Houston (713-664-6677) office for an appointment. In some instances, the foot doctor may prescribe a custom orthotic device to wear inside your shoes to correct biomechanical and other issues. Be sure to bring it with you to the shoe store and try it on with the shoes you are considering. Look for styles that offer good arch support, a roomy toe box and firm heel counter. Good shoes will most definitely get your New Year off to a great start!
