Do You Have Foot Fatigue?

Have you noticed that your feet and lower legs feel tired and sluggish? Do you have heel pain or pain in the arch of your foot? If yes, you may be experiencing foot fatigue, a condition that we at Texas Foot Specialists have seen a definite increase in since the re-opening of our state after the COVID 19 quarantine.

Foot fatigue is more of a symptom than a disorder. It often occurs if you become suddenly active after a long stretch of being inactive, as has happened to many of us after being home for several months. Foot fatigue can have other causes as well, including:

  • Improperly fitting shoes

  • Having a job that requires you to be on your feet for long periods

  • Anxiety

  • Dehydration

  • Being overweight

  • Biomechanical abnormality

Getting Relief

Since foot fatigue can be an indicator of a more serious podiatric problem, your first step should be to contact our Sugar Land (281-242-4448), Pasadena (281-991-0600) or Houston (713-664-6677) office for an appointment. Our podiatrists, Dr. Bruce Miller and Dr. Gregory Mangum, will conduct a complete podiatric exam and also get your medical history to track down the source of your foot fatigue.

If the cause of your pain is post-quarantine re-entry into regular physical activity, there are several measures you can take to help relieve uncomfortable symptoms.

  • Relieve foot pain by massaging feet at the end of the day and icing them to reduce inflammation.

  • Choose footwear that has good arch support, cushioned insoles, and heel cups. If you need to purchase new shoes, get your feet professionally measured to ensure a proper fit.

  • Wear your custom orthotic in your shoes if the podiatrist has prescribed one for you.

  • Take rest periods throughout the day as your schedule permits and get off your feet.

  • Stretch and flex your feet before and after exercising.

  • Maintain a healthy weight or lose weight if you put on extra pounds during quarantine.
