4 Tips to Protect Your Ankles
/Although the wintry weather seen a few weeks back in some parts of Texas is a rarity for us, at Texas Foot Specialists we know that even rain can bring slippery conditions that increase the risk of ankle-twisting injuries. Ankle sprains can be very debilitating, especially if not treated properly. Below are 4 strategies for avoiding this type of injury.
Watch Your Step—while this might sound like common sense, it’s essential in any weather to be aware of the path you’re walking on. Even a small stone can be enough to twist an ankle if you step on it the wrong way. Keep an eye out for broken or uneven pavement, objects, and potentially slippery spots when you walk.
Keep Your Hands Free—another common scenario that increases the risk of an ankle sprain is carrying too many bags and packages at one time. If both your hands are full, your view of what’s in front of you may be obstructed. Another important reason not to have your hands full is for better balance and to have your hands free to break your fall if you feel yourself going down.
Choose Footwear Wisely—your shoes can help or hinder you when it comes to avoiding ankle-twisting injuries. Thin, high heels are naturally unstable and shoes with smooth bottoms and no tread are more likely to give way.
Take Care of Sprains Promptly—too often patients put off seeking treatment for a sprain, hoping it will heal up on its own. It’s always best to have our podiatrists, Dr. Bruce Miller and Dr. Gregory Mangum, examine your ankle if you’ve injured it to determine the extent of the damage and the best treatment. Sometimes ankles will start to hurt less before they are actually healed, and this can lead to resuming regular activities too quickly and subsequently reinjuring the ankle. Likewise, if the podiatrist prescribes physical therapy, be sure to complete the full course, even if your ankle feels better. Taking the time to strengthen the muscles that surround and support the injured ligaments will help you avoid repeated sprains and chronic weak ankles.
