3 Ways Your Podiatrist Can Help Lower Your Fall Risk
/It’s September and that means time to focus on Fall Prevention Week for our senior patients. At Texas Foot Specialists, we’re letting families know that our podiatrists, Dr. Bruce Miller and Dr. Gregory Mangum want to partner with you to help prevent you (or someone you love) from becoming one of the 25% of people aged 65 and over who will fall this year. Falls are the top cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for people in this age group. But there are many ways to decrease fall risk and we’re here to help.
1. Fall Assessment
The foot doctor can help evaluate your risk of falling. There are several factors to take into consideration. Some of them are:
Number of previous falls
Current podiatric and other medical conditions
Medications
Vision
The podiatrist can also evaluate your balance, gait (the way you walk) and muscle strength. He will most likely ask questions about your lifestyle, whether you have any trouble standing or walking and if you have any fears about falling. To schedule an appointment for a fall assessment, contact our Sugar Land (281-242-4448), Pasadena (281-991-0600), or Houston (713-664-6677) office.
2. Dealing with Foot Pain
A primary cause of falls for seniors is foot pain. Any pain in your body will naturally cause you to move in such a way as to not hurt. Pain in your feet or ankles can alter the way you walk and throw off your balance. This is why it’s essential to get foot discomfort evaluated promptly and to follow the treatment plan the podiatrist prescribes to eliminate pain as quickly as possible. It’s also important to manage other medical issues such as diabetes and heart disease and to stay current with eye exams and other medical screenings.
3. Providing Accommodative Equipment
In addition to treating foot pain, the podiatrist may prescribe accommodative gear that will increase your stability and make it easier to keep your balance. This can take the form of custom orthotics, a brace, cane or walker. The foot doctor will make sure that any special equipment you receive is fitted properly and that you understand the correct way to use it.
