The Connection Between Your Feet and Your Throat
/Winter is approaching, and that means that many of us are starting to feel the chill. Usually it's not so bad. We get cold when we go out, and then we come inside and feel comfortable within a few minutes. But what if that doesn't happen? What if your feet get cold and stay that way no matter what you do?
If you are feeling more cold than usual and notice that it's harder than ever to warm your feet, or that the usual solutions (wool socks, insulated boots, lined slippers) aren't helping, you may be dealing with an underactive thyroid gland, known as hypothyroidism in medical terms.
The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the base of your throat, near your Adam's apple. It is a part of the endocrine system, a collection of glands that produce, store, and release hormones. The thyroid is responsible for hormones that control metabolism-the way your body uses energy. The thyroid's hormones are essential to processes including:
Breathing
Heart rate
Nervous system responses
Muscle tone
Menstrual cycles
Body temperature
Hypothyroidism can occur idiopathically, meaning that there is no known cause, or it can be related to other conditions including autoimmune disorders, pregnancy, or certain medications. When your thyroid is healthy, you won't be aware of its presence or activities. If the thyroid becomes underactive, you might notice fatigue, muscle aches and pain, increased sensitivity to cold (that explains those cold feet!), joint stiffness or swelling, dry skin, constipation, unexplained weight gain, and/or thinning hair.
If any of this sounds familiar, it's time to see a doctor.
