Could Custom Orthotics Be the Answer to Your Foot Pain?

Orthotics are custom-made medical devices that are inserted between your feet and your shoes to treat a wide range of issues, including plantar fasciitis, bursitis, tendonitis, diabetic foot ulcers, and chronic pain.

Clinical research has demonstrated that podiatrist-prescribed orthotics can:

  • improve foot movement

  • improve function

  • increase comfort, stability, and mobility

  • decrease foot pain

There are two kinds of orthotics that your doctor might prescribe, each for a different purpose. Crafted of a firm material such as plastic or graphite, functional orthotics are usually prescribed to control abnormal motion. They may be used to treat foot pain caused by an atypical stance or gait. They can also be used to treat foot and ankle injuries such as shin splints or tendinitis.

When a patient requires orthotics to provide cushioning and support, accommodative orthotics are appropriate. These softer, more padded orthotics can be used to treat a variety of uncomfortable conditions including corns, calluses, and the side effects of diabetes.

Over the counter shoe inserts sold in drug stores can provide some relief for foot pain. For a low price, they may temporarily add a bit of cushioning and support to your shoes, but you'll get what you pay for. On the other hand, many insurance plans offer coverage for orthotics. A quick call can help you understand your policy.  You have to pay some or all of the cost for your orthotics out of pocket, but they will be a worthwhile investment.

The effectiveness of mass-market inserts is limited. A prescription orthotic from your podiatrist will do a better job. When prescribing orthotics, our podiatrist draws on not only on what he sees when he examines your feet, but also on decades of his experience to customize relief based on your specific needs.

If you are recovering from an injury, if you're dealing with a chronic illness, or if foot pain is making it hard for you to be comfortable standing or walking, prescription orthotics may be the answer.
