Raising Your Arthritis Awareness in May
/May is Arthritis Awareness Month. How much do you know about this painful joint disease? Here are some arthritis facts from our podiatrists:
There are 26 bones in each of your feet and ankles. Together, that accounts for more than one-quarter of all the bones in your body!
Osteoarthritis is one common form of arthritis. It occurs when inflammation and injury break down the cartilage between the joints over time, causing the bones to rub against each other. Rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis also occur frequently.
In the feet, the joints at the heel, big toe, and ankle are particularly vulnerable to arthritis.
Did you know that gout is also a form of arthritis? It occurs when levels of uric acid crystals build up in the bloodstream and settle in the joints.
Anyone can get arthritis – men, women, and children. Women, people who are overweight or obese, and the elderly are most at risk.
Symptoms of arthritis include redness, pain, swelling, tenderness, difficulty wearing shoes, and discomfort when standing or walking.
The good news is that your podiatrist has many ways to treat your arthritis. Common approaches include:
over-the-counter and prescription pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medication
physical therapy
oral or injected steroids to manage inflammation
new, more supportive and comfortable shoes that offer room for arthritic toes
lifestyle changes such as a change in athletic routine
surgery, but only in extreme cases
