Pronation and Supination Can Affect Foot Health
/Are you familiar with the terms “pronation” and “supination?” These refer to the natural inward and outward movements of your feet during walking and running. These movements make it possible for the feet and ankles to move properly and absorb the force of impact created with every step you take. In short, appropriate pronation and supination make it possible for you to move through the world without discomfort. When these movements are exaggerated, pain can result. Fortunately, your podiatrist can help.
Each time your foot makes contact with the ground, it rolls inward. This is pronation. This should be a slight angle of 15% or less, so that the entire foot touches the ground briefly before you push off for the next step. If the angle of the inward roll is excessive, injury can result. Achilles tendonitis, heel pain from plantar fasciitis, and bunions are possibilities. People with flat feet are at increased risk of overpronation.
Supination is the opposite of pronation. Pronation refers to the inward roll of the foot when it lands; supination is the outward rolling of the foot when it lifts off the ground. Oversupination can cause excessive strain on the ankles and toes, leading to foot and ankle injuries.
A board-certified podiatrist can help with discomfort caused by overpronation and/or oversupination. Common treatment options include:
physical therapy
new, supportive footwear
custom orthotics to provide cushioning and support while correcting posture and gait
