Tips for Safe Crutch Usage
/During your recovery from surgery or from a foot or ankle injury, your podiatrist might recommend that you use crutches for a period of time. Made of wood or lightweight aluminum, crutches are a great tool to help increase mobility and stability when you are unable to bear weight on a foot or ankle.
If you need to use crutches, it’s essential that you know how to do so safely. Here are five tips to help you:
To walk safely with your crutches, begin by shifting your weight to your uninjured leg. Move the crutches in front of you. Shift your weight to your arms and swing your body through the crutches. Place your unhurt leg in front again and repeat the motion to continue moving toward your destination.
While using crutches, never support your weight on your armpits. Always use the hand grips when using crutches.
Maintain stability by keeping your crutches close to your body.
Avoid stairs unless you have a friend or family member available to spot you. Use the elevator instead.
To sit, back slowly toward your chair until you can reach for the armrests. Be sure to choose a chair that will not roll or slide.
If your doctor or physical therapist suggests crutches, use them every day and for as long as recommended. Failing to do so can prolong your recovery time.
If you have sustained an injury to your feet, ankles, or lower legs, the first thing you should do is schedule a visit with your podiatrist.
