Sever's Disease Can Be a Problem for Growing Kids

When the growth plate in the heel of an adolescent or teen is injured, Sever's disease can occur. Children are most at risk for this condition when they are in the early part of their growth spurts in early puberty. Sever's disease is most commonly seen in girls 8 years to 10 years old and in ages 10-12.

Feet are one of the first body parts to grow to adult size. During this time, it is common for bones to grow faster than tendons or muscles, which become tight as a result. The already less-flexible back of the heel area may experience too much pressure during weight-bearing activity performed while standing or running, causing injury and leading to Sever's disease. Physically active children are at greater risk than their more sedentary peers. Soccer players and gymnasts are at particular risk, but Sever's disease is often seen in children who do any running or jumping activity. Sever's disease rarely occurs in older teenagers because the back of the heel has typically finished growing by 15 years of age.

Be alert to pain in one or both of your child's heels and if you observe limping or tiptoeing, especially if it begins with the start of a new activity or a new sports season. You can do an at-home test to see if it might be Sever's disease: squeeze both sides of the back of the heel to see if it hurts. If so, it's time to call the podiatrist.

If your foot doctor confirms your suspicion and diagnoses Sever's disease, she or he will have numerous treatment options available including rest, over-the-counter and prescription medication, stretching and physical therapy, and custom orthotics to provide cushioning and support.
