Proper Foot Care for Children

Parents are entrusted with ensuring that their kids grow into healthy adults. This is done by instilling in them the importance of living healthy. But one area that is often overlooked is the feet. Since this is not as visible and often hidden by shoes, noticing anything unusual can be tricky.

Smelly feet is common among children but definitely is not normal. This is just one of the few things that parent should keep an eye for.  Smelly feet could indicate a fungal or bacterial infection. But this is something relatively easy to fix. Practicing good hygiene can prevent it from ever happening.

Smelly Feet – Prevention

Foul smelling feet is more common among male children. Anatomically, they have more sweat glands hence perspire more profusely. Males have a greater tendency of participating in sports and other physical activities. Preventing foul smelling feet can be done by using antibacterial powder. Changing and washing shoes regularly prevent fungus and bacteria from creeping into the feet.

Stubborn smelly feet that doesn’t go away can be a symptom of infection.

Keeping our Children’s Feet Healthy

Many of the physical changes that our body undergoes happens in children. Our body becomes mature and we grow, physically. But how healthy our body during our adult years is determined by our time growing up. The feet may not have the same level of attention but any foot problems in children should be taken seriously.

Keeping our child’s feet healthy should be done as early as possible. And this starts when they are babies. Give your baby’s feet the freedom to mature properly. A pair of socks would look also as nice as a pair of baby shoes. Constantly check your child’s feet for any signs of infection.

What we learn as children plays a huge role in what we practice as adults. And practicing proper foot care makes it second habit. Things to keep in mind include:

  • Wearing the proper type of shoes for the activity

  • Washing the feet regularly

  • Reporting any signs of injury such as pain or swelling

  • Regular visits to the doctor

  • Changing shoes and socks

A podiatrist can help identify early signs of foot disorders in children.
