Understanding Acquired Adult Flatfoot Deformity

Are you experiencing pain or tenderness on the sole of your foot when walking or running? This can be the symptom of a posterior tibial tendon dysfunction or more commonly called acquired adult flatfoot deformity (AAFD). This is the continuous flattening of the arch on your foot that results from the dysfunction of the posterior tibial tendon.

Symptoms of Acquired Adult Flatfoot Deformity

·       Pain at the ankle or hind foot

·       Ankle or back foot deformity

·       Tenderness along the posterior tibial tendon

·       Progressive flattening of the arch

·       Rotation of the forefoot

·       Heel cord tightening

·       Arthritis may develop at a later stage

4 Stages of Acquired Adult Flatfoot Deformity

First Stage: During the first stage of AAFD, symptoms are less severe and usually includes inflammation. The posterior tibial tendon can be a bit irritated but can still function normally.

Second Stage: Your doctor may be able to determine the presence of stage two AAFD if you are unable to perform a single-leg heel rise. In stage two, there is a change in the alignment of your foot. This can be observed when standing. When AAFD is identified during this early stage, a doctor can have an easier time treating your foot deformity. Consult a podiatrist if you observe any AAFD symptoms.

Third Stage: This is the stage when arthritis and stiffness becomes pronounced. Arthritis is caused by the constant pressure on the joints caused by the foot deformity. When this happens, the foot is unable to return to its normal position.

Fourth Stage: This marks the most severe stage of the foot deformity. This is when arthritis and stiffness has already reached the ankles. An X-ray or advanced imaging techniques may show that the ankles has become uneven. The deltoid ligament which is responsible for the inward displacement of your weight becomes injured causing joint damage and arthritis.

Acquired adult flatfoot deformity or AAFD can easily be treated when diagnosed early.
