Non-surgical Treatments for Bunions
/A bunion can be described as a protrusion located at the base of the big toe. This deformity is caused by the inflammation of the joint that connects your big toe with your foot. Bunions are more likely to be seen in women more than men. Years of wearing tight, narrow shoes such as those seen in high heels can place great pressure on the ligament which leads to pain and swelling in the area.
Initial treatment of bunions can be done without surgery. The main objective of non-surgical treatment is to provide immediate pain relief and stop the condition from progressing. A podiatrist helps identify the extent of the condition and can recommend the best course of treatment.
The goals of non-surgical bunion treatment:
1. Reduce pain and relieve pressure caused by the bunion
2. Prevent the condition from progressing
3. Improve weight distribution in the feet
Management
Pain management in people suffering from bunions can be done by simply placing ice wrapped in a towel over the area. Gently rub over the swelled area for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day.
Wear loose footwear to immediately decrease pressure over the area. Wearing sneakers going to the office or sandals when sitting behind the desk gives your feet a welcome break from wearing tight office shoes.
Exercises can be used to improve foot strength and promote joint movement. It reduces foot stiffness and partially restore correct alignment.
Custom made orthotics can be used to provide additional support and relieve pressure from the bunion. It helps redistribute load bearing away from the bunion.
Keep in mind that since bunions are progressive, non-surgical treatments often only provide temporary relief from symptoms. Surgery may be the only way to correct the bunion deformity.
