At Texas Foot Specialists, a common complaint that we hear from patients is “my heel hurts.” Heel pain can be a complex issue because there are several possible causes including:

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Sever’s disease

  • Heel spurs

  • Flat feet

  • High arches

  • Fat pad atrophy

If you are experiencing pain in your heel, you should contact our Sugar Land (281-242-4448), Pasadena (281-991-0600) or Houston (713-664-6677) office for an appointment so that our podiatrists Dr. Bruce Miller or Dr. Gregory Mangum can examine your feet and diagnose the disorder that is causing your discomfort. The foot doctor can also give you stretches and foot exercises that can help prevent some heel problems.

There are also several ways that patients can be proactive about heel health. Taking simple steps now can help prevent conditions that can cause heel issues down the road.

Maintain a Healthy Weight—your heels take a pounding as you walk through each day—you take about 8,000 steps on average. The more you weigh, the more pressure is put on your heels and the greater the impact on them. If you are overweight, talk to your physician about ways that you can lose weight safely.

Modify Your Exercise Routine—if your fitness regimen consists of high impact activities such as running, you may want to consider switching it up now and then with some low impact exercise such as swimming or using an elliptical machine. Making sure you warm-up and stretch before starting your workout will also help your heels.

Re-Think Your Shoes—as with many foot health issues, your shoes can play a big role in how your feet feel. Shoes that lack proper arch support can aggravate your plantar fascia and contribute to heel pain. It’s also important to be sure that your shoes are fitted properly and that you don’t continue to wear them after they have become worn out. Look for styles with a deep and well-cushioned heel cup for maximum comfort.
