At Texas Foot Specialists, our primary goal is helping to correct podiatric problems and alleviate patients’ lower extremity pain and discomfort. We have a wide variety of options in our treatment toolbox, including custom orthotics. Oftentimes patients come to us having tried unsuccessfully to treat serious foot problems with over-the-counter shoe inserts. Our podiatrists Dr. Bruce Miller and Dr. Gregory Mangum have undergone many years of medical school, residencies and clinical experience and will best be able to determine the treatment needed for your foot condition.

Below are some facts about orthotics and shoe inserts.

FACT: There may be times when a store-bought arch support, heel pad or other product will help make your feet feel more comfortable and could help with minor issues. It’s still best, however, to get any ongoing foot pain evaluated by the podiatrist first to rule out more serious diseases and disorders.

FACT: While shoe inserts can increase comfort, they cannot correct biomechanical foot problems. Only a custom orthotic can do that.

FACT: A custom orthotic is made from a physical or digital mold of your own foot and is created to match the contours and structure of your individual foot. They are made for you alone to wear. Products that claim to be “custom-made” without a prescription from a podiatrist are not.

FACT: Shoe inserts are less expensive than custom orthotics. However, since custom orthotics are prescribed by a doctor, they may be covered at least in part by your health insurance. Orthotics are also constructed of top-quality materials and are made to last for many years of use.

FACT: Patients with diabetes should never attempt to choose non-custom orthotic pads to protect their feet. Accommodative orthotics prescribed by the foot doctor are made to protect diabetic ulcers and help prevent them from getting worse.
