Taking Steps for a Healthier Heart

At Texas Foot Specialists, we’re celebrating American Heart Month. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in our country. It’s also a disease we can do something about. Your feet can play a big role in improving heart health because a major way to reduce your risk for heart disease is by getting and staying active. One very simple way to do this is walking. Even if you’ve been inactive for a while, walking is an easy way to get back in shape—one step at a time. It has several advantages as a fitness activity:

  • Inexpensive—a good pair of walking shoes is all you need

  • Do it anywhere, indoors or out

  • Can be done on your own or with friends

Below are some suggestions to help you step out for better heart health.

  • Start with a checkup. Our podiatrists Dr. Bruce Miller and Dr. Gregory Mangum will want to make sure that any chronic foot problems such as bunions or plantar fasciitis are under control and may also make shoe recommendations based on your individual foot conditions. Contact our Sugar Land (281-242-4448), Pasadena (281-991-0600) or Houston (713-664-6677) office for an appointment.

  • Take baby steps. Start with just an easy 15-minute walk. Increase duration and distance when it feels comfortable.

  • Pencil it in. You’re more likely to stick with a walking plan if you put in on your calendar the same way you would other important appointments. If finding time for a long walk is difficult, schedule 10-20 minute walks on multiple days.

  • Sneak in extra steps. Find ways to add extra steps—park farther away from stores and offices, grab the leash and give your dog an extra time or two around the block, walk while you talk on the phone and opt for the stairs instead of the elevator now and then. Consider getting a device that tracks your steps for added motivation.

You’ll be surprised how quickly little steps add up and improve your health and mood. If you experience any foot or ankle discomfort as you increase your walking, contact us promptly to get it evaluated.
