Post-Pandemic Foot Fashions
/As the pandemic and all that it entailed continues to slowly recede, we’re beginning to see many ripple effects from this strange time in our history. At Texas Foot Specialists, we know that this time has affected our culture too. Increased sales in loungewear, online exercise programs, and now, diets to help lose the “quarantine 15” (or more) are all front and center. Similarly, shoe styles and foot care habits have also undergone some changes.
Comfort Shoes or No Shoes
With many people not going out of the house to work, go to school, shop or socialize, footwear wardrobes shrank. Slippers, comfy slides, flip-flops or just going barefoot became commonplace. Now, as we re-enter a more active life, many patients are coming to our Sugar Land (281-242-4448), Pasadena (281-991-0600 or Houston (713-664-6677) office complaining of foot pain. All of the styles described above and walking barefoot leave the arch of your foot unsupported. This puts a strain on the heel and can lead to plantar fasciitis. It’s important to get back in the habit of wearing shoes that provide arch support as well as a cushioned insole and firm heel counter. If it seems uncomfortable, start by wearing supportive shoes for several hours a day and work up to full time.
Ouch! These Shoes are Too Tight
After not being in shoes for a while, some people are finding it hurts to get back into them. There’s a couple of reasons your shoes may not fit comfortably anymore:
· Out of practice—After a year plus of wearing shoes without any real structure or no shoes, your feet just might find the confining sensation of shoes uncomfortable.
· Weight gain—Putting on excess pounds puts pressure on your feet and can cause your feet to spread and enlarge.
· Aging—It’s not unusual for your feet to get larger as you age.
· New foot problem—It’s possible that you’ve developed a new foot disorder that is causing you pain.
What to Do
If after wearing shoes for a few days the pain and discomfort don’t seem to be decreasing, contact us to set up an appointment with our podiatrists, Dr. Bruce Miller and Dr. Gregory Mangum to determine if you have a podiatric problem. If you get the “all clear” from the foot doctor, you should go to a reputable shoe store and get your feet professionally measured. It may just be time for some new shoes.
