June is Men’s Health Month and at Texas Foot Specialists we want to help our male patients enjoy better foot health. Currently, the life expectancy for men is 5 years shorter than for women. Studies show that men are also more likely than women to skip annual physical exams with their doctors. We believe in being proactive about the health of your feet. Below are 5 suggestions for men—and the women who love them—to make men’s feet healthier.

1. Keep feet clean and dry. Simple basic hygiene can go a long way in preventing many common foot ailments like fungal infections. Wash feet daily with soap and water and dry completely, paying particular attention to the spaces between the toes where athlete’s foot tends to start. Always wear clean socks and change them if you notice they feel damp. If your feet sweat excessively, dust with talcum or anti-fungal powder each morning.

2. Protect feet on the job. Wear appropriate work boots and protective shoes if you are in the construction field or a workplace where there are hazardous chemicals.

3. Discard shoes when they are worn out. Many men don’t like to shop but procrastinating when you need new shoes can lead to a slew of foot problems from toe deformities to ball of foot pain and Achilles tendonitis. Don’t order shoes online—it’s essential to try shoes on and walk around the store before purchasing. Get your feet measured professionally to make sure you’re buying the right size.

4. Make healthy lifestyle choices. Not smoking, drinking moderately, exercising regularly and avoiding being overweight will all have a positive impact on the health of your feet as well as on your overall physical and mental condition.
