Beat the Beach Day Blues
/At Texas Foot Specialists we know that summer means beach days. What could be nicer than jumping waves, cooling off in the surf, and relaxing under a beach umbrella with a good book? However, hazards for your feet lurk in this idyllic setting that could quickly turn your beach day into a bust! Below, what to look out for and how to prevent it from spoiling your fun in the sand, surf, and sun.
Sharp Objects in the Sand—who doesn’t enjoy a walk on the beach? Beneath the sand’s surface, however, lurk jagged shells and pieces of broken glass that can give you a nasty cut. A pair of water shoes or flip-flops will protect the bottoms of your feet from these unwanted buried treasures. Keeping your feet covered can also provide protection from jellyfish that have washed ashore—their stingers can still get you, even if the jellyfish is dead. Keep a small container of vinegar or baking soda in your beach bag to apply to a jellyfish sting. It will reduce pain and inflammation.
Beach Sport Ankle Sprains—ultimate frisbee or a game of beach volleyball anyone? Always fun and a good way to work up a sweat before a swim, these seaside sports played in shifting sands can easily end in an ankle twisting or other type of injury. If active play is part of your beach day, pack a pair of sneakers to give your feet some extra support and stability.
Fungal Infections in the Restrooms—why are restrooms harbingers of fungi? They are moist, humid, and dark and they see lots of barefoot traffic. Fungal infections are spread by direct contact. Protect yourself by always slipping on your flip-flops or water shoes before making a restroom run.
Burned Soles from Sand and Sun—how hot is that sand? Extremely hot! Sa temperature can get as high as 140 degrees which is enough to cause a third-degree burn to the soles of your feet. A pair of closed shoes or sneakers is best for making your way out to your perfect spot on the beach. Remember also to apply sunscreen to the bottoms of your feet. As you sit and read or lay out on your beach blanket the bottoms of your feet are fully exposed to the sun’s powerful rays.
