Understanding Swollen, Puffy Feet

Swollen feet are common, but this uncomfortable condition is not impossible to avoid. First, it's important to know some of the common causes of foot swelling:

  • Edema - This occurs when your body holds on to too much water. This frequently occurs after a long airplane flight or a long stretch of time standing. You might also notice edema the morning after a meal containing large quantities of sodium. Some women experience edema as part of their monthly cycle. Edema is also common during pregnancy.

  • Foot and ankle injuries - Your foot may swell after you trip or fall. This can be a sign of a problem including a sprain or fracture.

  • Chronic Venous Insufficiency - One- way valves in the veins of your legs can become damaged over time, causing blood to collect in your legs and feet and creating swelling.

  • Illness - some diseases, including heart disease, kidney disease, and liver disease can first manifest as foot swelling.

YOU CAN MANAGE MODERATE FOOT SWELLING AT HOME WITH A FEW SIMPLE STEPS:

  • RICE: This stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation.  Get off your feet, prop them up, and apply some ice to the swelling. Be sure to wear socks and shoes. No going barefoot with swollen feet! Special extra-tight socks called compression socks can also help. These are available at your podiatrist's office.

  • Take a walk. Moving around often helps relieve swelling in the feet.

  • Eat carefully. Minimize your salt intake. Be sure to eat a healthy diet rich in lean protein, whole grains and colorful fruits and vegetables.

  • Drink plenty of water. Hydrating will minimize swelling.
