You Can Prevent and Minimize Gout Attacks
/Have you recently been diagnosed with gout? Gout is an illness in which levels of uric acid in the body rise. These acid molecules form crystals that flow loose in the bloodstream and ultimately settle in the joints, often the knuckle of the big toe, causing painful gout attacks.
You can take steps to minimize your risk of gout attack:
Gout attacks often occur after a big "night on the town" complete with high-fat foods and excessive drinking. Eat a sensible diet high in lean protein sources, whole grains, and colorful fruits and vegetables.
Certain foods are high in chemicals called purines which can trigger gout attacks and should be avoided. These include red meat and gravy, seafood, alcohol (especially beer), beans, peas, and lentils.
High fructose corn syrup has been linked to gout attacks. Limit your consumption of soda and other sugary beverages.
Maintain a moderate weight.
Drink plenty of water.
Take any medication that has been prescribed for you.
Gout attacks often occur overnight. If you're awakened with discomfort in a joint, especially if it is swollen, red or radiating heat, you'll want to take steps to minimize the duration and intensity of the attack:
Take any prescription or over-the-counter medication you have on hand to mitigate pain and swelling.
Apply ice to the painful area.
Drink plenty of fluids to help flush the uric acid from your system.
